Shepherd Book | Firefly

Arrival:

Accepting this ticket was, now, the second most impulsive thing Shepherd Book has ever done. Had it only been hours? Less than a day, surely, since he'd stormed from the Serenity. Somehow, he always knew it would end that way. Him and Mal. At least he'd tried.

And so, on to another ship, one that is in many ways the precise opposite of the Serenity. Opulence and comfort and cash ooze from every bulkhead. Despite the staff's efforts to welcome everyone, there is a rising discomfort growing up the Shepherd's spine. It's too reminiscent of the Inner Worlds of the Verse.

Book is trying to find a quiet space, as soon as the welcome niceties are done with. Too bad it is very easy to run into another passenger when there are so many around.

Defying Gravity:

Perhaps Book spoke too soon when he called this ship the Serenity's opposite. It's the first thought unbidden to his head when the alarms sound and the gravity fails. He can't stop himself from a dry laugh.

Book is one of those who pulls himself towards the lobby, one practiced tug at a time. He's handled himself in zero-g before, clinging to a wall, any kind of hand-hold that he can find.

When an order is barked at him, it turns out old habits do truly die hard, and Book snaps to. The transport tubes. God, are there people off the ship? "Of course!"

A silent prayer passes over his mind as he floats towards one of the controls. Unfamiliar, he needs a moment to figure them out. "I need a hand here!"
